Beales Research Group

The Beales Group is based in the School of Chemistry at the University of Leeds. Its members are also part of the Astbury Centre for Structural Molecular Biology.

We are interested in understanding and harnessing the self-organising principles of biomolecular systems, applying these concepts to develop new materials, particularly with relevance to healthcare technologies.

One of our main research themes is in biological and biomimetic membranes: we are investigating how biomembranes respond to molecular and macromolecular stimuli in their environment, with particular interest in nanoparticles and polymers that might be useful in drug delivery and diagnostic applications.

We are also developing novel membrane-based technologies with applications in nanomedicine, biotechnology, nanoreactors and synthetic biology.
