We are one of the most prestigious chemistry departments in the UK, having built up a national and international reputation for our teaching and research excellence over more than one hundred years.

RAE2008 logo In the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 2008 the School was confirmed as one of the top departments, being ranked 8th in the UK. This is reinforced by our "excellent" rating for our teaching in the Teaching Quality Assessment (TQA). The School of Chemistry has 55 academic and academic-related staff, in excess of 140 postgraduate students and 50 postdoctoral fellows.

The School of Chemistry has recently undergone a £13m refurbishment of all its research and teaching laboratories, providing some of the best facilities for synthetic, physical and analytical chemistry in the country. We offer a friendly environment to support all aspects of your studies, and aim to provide you with the opportunities to reach your full potential and career aspirations. We have just unveiled the Chaston Chapman lounge, a new shared space for all our students and staff.
